Direction-of-arrival, time delay and Doppler shift estimation in radar and communications array systems
The problem of estimating the delays and doppler shifts from multiple reflections of moving targets is studied. Here, the transmitted signal waveform and the number of multipath reflections are assumed to be known.
This situation occurs, for instance, in radar applications when a known transmitted signal is reflected by moving targets as depicted in the figure above. By estimating the reflected signals time-delay and frequency offset, it is possible to estimate the position and velocity of the reflecting objects. In communication applications, the situation occurs when the transmitter is rapidly moving or has an unknown frequency offset. Here, the estimation of the delays and frequency offsets is necessary in establishing a clean, inter-symbol and interference-free communication link.
