Numerical Acoustics

We focus on some of the most commonly used numerical methods for wave propagation and acoustics in particular. The course is intended to give an overview of the different methods, the motivation behind the numerical approaches as well as their limitations. Typical applications are:

  • Sound propagation in the ocean coupled with bottom interaction
  • Atmospheric sound propagation (and perhaps some generation of sound)

The main methods that we will focus on are:

  • Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) methods
  • Helmholtz methods
  • Parabolic equation (PE) methods
  • Ray tracing methods

There will be approximately 10 Lectures. There will be one big Project that will be presented at the end in form of a short report and oral presentation (30 minutes for each group). The presentations will be held on December 13, between 10.15 and 15.
