Computer Science Education Research in Uppsala

Experiment with gender conscious teaching in the course Digital technology and Computer Architecture.

The project is funded by Sponsored by Development and Evaluation Unit at Uppsala University.

An experiment with gender segregated groups was performed in a section of the course teaching assembly programming. Two experimental groups were created, one consisting of only female students and the other one of an otherwise (apart from the sex) equal group of male students. Both groups were given the same teaching by the same teacher. Interaction in the classroom was studied by an independent observer. The question in focus was if interaction in the classroom differs in any way between groups of female and male students, eg in what questions are asked and who asks question. Our objective was to bring experiences from these gender segregated groups to our ordinary groups where female students are a small minority.
