These schemes, which are based on numerical fluxes, use linearly stable numerical flux functions in the smooth areas of the solution. In this way the convergence rate in the smooth parts becomes the expected from local truncation analysis. These schemes also yield sharp shock transitions. We discuss how to choose the time step and we propose an algorithm for the sharpening of contact discontinuities. Finally, numerical results for scalar problems, and for the Euler equations of gas dynamics in one and two space dimensions, are presented.
